“Secretariat of the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture”

An agronomist by training, Álvaro has a master's degree in science in phytotechnics and another in conservation of plant genetic resources. As Undersecretary of the Treaty, he provides technical leadership in negotiations to improve the functioning of the Treaty's multilateral mechanisms: the Multilateral System of Access and Benefit-sharing, the Financing Strategy and the Benefit-sharing Fund. Supports the Secretary on policy, governance and program coherence, and in leading collaboration and partnerships with relevant international institutions, such as the Convention on Biological Diversity. He joined FAO in 2002 with increasing responsibilities in different units.
