Andrés Carvajal is a Biochemist, Doctor. Currently, he is a researcher in Animal Genetics and Biotechnology at the Institute of Agricultural Research, INIA Chile. His work focuses on the application of biotechnological tools to increase the sustainability of pasture-based livestock systems that predominate in southern Chile. Its focus is to identify bovine and ovine genotypes of interest for the milk and meat production chain, with the purpose of generating value-added products, as well as characterization studies and enhancement of animal populations in terms of their racial purity, through the use of zoometric tools and population genetics. In this area, he has participated in the initiatives that have allowed the development of local sheep breeds such as the Chilota, Künko and Hidango. In addition, he has carried out studies with Creole populations of cattle and goats, contributing to the obtaining of protection marks such as the geographical indication (GI) of the Chilote lamb.
