Cryopreservation – the challenge of preserving recalcitrant organisms and the microbiome

 

Matthew Ryan, BSc. (Hons), PhD. Currently, he is a research leader of biological resources and curator of the microbial culture collection of the Center for Agricultural Bioscience International - CABI. He directs research aimed at guaranteeing the genomic and functional stability of fungi and bacteria, through the development of new cryopreservation protocols. He has worked in international activities to contribute to the infrastructure of culture collections and biobanks to meet the needs of the microbiome research community, particularly in the agri-food areas. He is project director of the UK BBSRC Crop Microbiome Cryobank and a contributor to the EU microbiome support project. He also participates in CABI initiatives related to mycology, biological resources and agri-food. He serves in various roles nationally and internationally, including the KTN Microbiome innovation group, and as a board member for the International Alliance for Phytobiomes Research and on the US Culture Collection Network (USCCN) committee.
