Erika Salazar is an Agricultural Engineer from the University of Chile and a PhD in Agricultural Sciences from the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, specializing in conservation and the study of genetic diversity of populations of cultivated species. She is a researcher at INIA Chile, in charge of the Genetic Resources Unit and the Germplasm Bank of INIA La Platina, transforming said unit into the first conservation bank ex situ of seeds of horticultural and fruit importance in the country. Through collection and repatriation, he has recovered dozens of vegetable seeds in danger of disappearing. Among his contributions, the first study on the conservation status of wild and cultivated species in Chile, the creation of the base collection of germplasm of grape varieties cultivated in this country, the creation of the first Varietal Offer Center for seeds of traditional varieties stand out. and networks of multiplier farmers. His projects and publications are related to the development of models, morphological and molecular characterization, and rescue and valuation of crop diversity, in order to optimize conservation. ex situ and on site in Chile, and promote its use.
